NCEA 1.5 Formal writing – spoken language study

Standard english is the most unefficent way of communicating through written language. It shows no emotion and no sound. Modern generations have developed a way of written communication where paralynguistic features are used to give more meaning and efficency to a simple text message. The most benifical paralnguistic features involve sound. Homophones, ommissions, pauses and repeated vowels or constinents all add indepth sound and meaning to written language.

Homophones

Homophones are used in text to save time and add meaning to written language. Homophones are two identical sounds made by different words, letters, or symbols.  “U” is a commonly used homophone. It is used in place of “you”. But why? Using sounds in writing allows for more efficency and makes texting more casual. In a text message “gr8” and “great” have different meanings behind them. Generally speaking you wouldn’t see “gr8” In a conversation between people of high formality. However, in an unformal conversation “gr8” gives off a comfortable social meaning. It shows that the writer has trust and most likely a relationship with the other person and knows  they will understand the text language. When information like specific times or dates need to be expressed standard English is used. This was shown in one of my own paragraphs that we transcribed. “See you at my house at 8:15” was the only formal line used throughout the conversation. This was because the time and place was key information.

Pauses

Pauses are used in written language to add pacing. Pacing makes written language more alike spoken language than standard English. When speaking pauses are used to show emphasis and variety. This has been eliminated by standard English by removing the new texting language features. In one of my own transcribed text messages “Very happy actually. Facetime soon?” was used and the pause changed the sentence. It made the reader read the sentence as if they were speaking it. Without seeing the writer face to face its easier to interpret what emotion they were trying to portray with pauses. The pause also allowed for a change in subject. Without having to type two full sentences key words and pauses were used together to only give nessecery information. Without using joining words or proper standard english two ideas were able to be written in five words. This proves the point that using paralynguistic features allows for more effecient communication. Pauses have also been developed to show vareity in a conversation. A pause. A break. Keeps the reader interested in a conversation. This method of pausing is used through spoken language aswell as written language. By using pauses reading or listening becomes more intersting and easier. With a pause the reader has time to think and process the information. Without it the writing becomes boring and hard to process.

Ommissions

An omission is what is left out or excluded. Omissions are much more powerful

Repeated consonants or vowels

Repeating Consonants or vowels is something very specific to our new texting language. It doesn’t occur often in standard english or in Spoken lamguage.
